100 Days in the Life of a President/CEO
We recently sat down with Rev. Chico Daniels to ask him about his first 100 days as President & CEO of Mel Trotter Ministries. We hope this gives you a great introduction to this servant-leader whom we are blessed to have overseeing our outreach to the poor and homeless!
Q: Rev. Daniels, what can you tell us about your first 100 days at Mel Trotter?
A: It has excited me. Mel Trotter is the oldest and largest mission in the Grand Rapids area, and is a name that is trusted. To be associated with Mel Trotter is special. As a President & CEO of color, this is a rare opportunity to display maturity, wisdom, and all that has shaped me. I need to draw upon life experiences to be the leader that God wants me to be here at this time.
Q: What are your initial goals as Executive Director?
A: After 108 years,I have to ask, are we resting on our laurels? Can we run a more efficient ship? Yes! Stewardship is the key.The current Michigan economy is stressed and we need to continue to collaborate with other agencies to best serve the homeless population.
Q: What do you envision for Mel Trotter’s future?
A: The community is changing before our very eyes. We will have to address the effects of gentrification, the luxury condos, the buildings and the businesses moving into our neighborhood. How do we come across? As good neighbors? Even to the new church, Bethlehem Lutheran. We need to continue to think about the future of ministry and expansion—on issues like transitional housing, aftercare, and apartments.
Q: What is the direction of the ministry in 2008?
A: We have many goals for increased services, such as:
• Expanding our auto repair program
• Hiring more long-term residents in our stores
• Educating more people through GED
• Developing a Culinary Arts program
I also want to see area companies be more forgiving of people. For example,if our clients step up and complete the program, then the community needs to be understanding and forgiving of a person’s past and be willing to give them a chance.
Q: What would you like to share with donors?
A: Through the years,we’ve been blessed with many donors—many giving sacrificially. They will see us in the newsletter and through the web, but most of them have not seen what we do here. I want to invite them; “Come and see your investment—see how it is paying off in the lives of people!” That’s the beauty of the local cause; you’re able to come down and see for yourself. And seeing is believing.
