Myth: Homeless people should just get a job

When you see someone sleeping under a bridge or panhandling do you think, “Why can’t they just get a job?” CEO of Mel Trotter Ministries, Dennis Van Kampen, addresses the myth that getting someone off the street is as easy as just getting a job. At MTM we have found that there could be many barriers to housing apart from unemployment.
Possible causes of homelessness could be:

  • Broken relationships
  • Divorce
  • Job loss
  • Eviction
  • Mental illness
  • Addiction
  • Death of a family member
  • Physical injury/illness
  • Lack of community & support networks

The Mission Myth Busters series seeks to address misconceptions about homelessness and helps to bring awareness to issues people experiencing homelessness face.
