Unique ways to give back this holiday season
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) - As the seasons change and the holiday season approaches, you and your family, co-workers and church community are probably starting to think about how you can give some of your blessings to the community. This year, you can get creative with your holiday giving. Here are a few non-traditional ways to support your neighbors who are experiencing homelessness.
Donate your vehicle
The end of the year is one of the best times to purchase a new vehicle… but what should you do with your old car? Consider donating it to Mel Trotter Ministries. Whether you’re looking for a potential tax write off, eliminating the hassle of selling your car, or knowing that the sale of your car goes to help get people out of homelessness and transform lives, this unique way of giving back will benefit your community.
Donors who give vehicles to Mel Trotter Ministries can be the key to restoration for the men, women and children who are trying to overcome homelessness in greater Grand Rapids. Your donated vehicle is sold at auction or scrapped for parts and all proceeds go directly to Mel Trotter Ministries to help our guests move forward to achieving sustainable income and safe, affordable housing.
MTM accepts all autos, trucks, vans, SUVs, motorcycles, ATVs, lawn mowers, tractors, jet skis, RVs, boats, and campers.

Donate to the Code Blue Drive
There’s a new way you can get your friends, family, co-workers, school mates and church members involved in giving before the year is over. Participate in Mel Trotter’s new Code Blue Drive from October 22 – December 31.
"Code blue” is a term used by MTM describe the most extreme winter conditions in West Michigan, when temperatures fall significantly and stay below freezing over a period of time - putting men, women and children who are exposed to the elements at severe risk of hypothermia, frost bite or even death.
During this time, Mel Trotter Ministries staff take extra precautions to ensure our homeless neighbors are safe, warm and know the love of Jesus Christ...but we need your help to make sure we can provide supplies for everyone who needs help this winter.
Collect new or like new items for men, women & children. All ages and sizes.
- Hand warmers (new only)
- Winter coats
- Waterproof winter boots
- Hats (Please no handmade hats)
- Wool or fleece socks
- Long underwear
Make it a fun competition by creating teams at church or work to see how many items you can collect before the end of the year. Ask your holiday party guests to bring some (unwrapped) items listed above to donate to Mel Trotter Ministries.
This is a sure way you know that someone will be warm and know they are loved throughout the harsh Michigan winters.
