Gavin’s Volunteer Story
Gavin has been volunteering at Mel Trotter Ministries since late September of last year.
His journey into volunteering at the clinic stemmed from a deep-rooted passion for community service, a value he learned while volunteering at his old church in Kalamazoo. “I really liked volunteering at church, and I like the community aspects that I get from volunteering here,” Gavin shared. His commitment is evident as he offers his time once a week, serving as a medical assistant in the clinic. He explained, “I take people’s vitals and get them all checked in,” ensuring that each patient receives the compassionate care and attention they need right from the start.
Gavin’s involvement with Mel Trotter Ministries was sparked by his interest in Michigan State University’s Street medicine programs. He was drawn to the opportunity to blend his passion for service with his career goals in medicine. Volunteering not only enriches his med school applications but also provides valuable clinical experience. “I like getting clinical experience and seeing a different side of medicine,” he said, highlighting how this role differs from his day-to-day work and offers a unique perspective on health care.
For Gavin, the most rewarding aspect of volunteering is the interaction with guests, as it allows him to connect with people on a personal level. He encourages others to consider volunteering, emphasizing flexibility and fulfillment.
Thank you for your dedication to caring for our guests each week, Gavin!
