George’s Story
When George first arrived at the doors of Mel Trotter Ministries, he was in a deep pit of depression. After struggling with addiction for years as a way to cope with his painful childhood memories, he felt completely lost and broken. George was at the point where he wanted to end it all, but now looks back and said, “The Lord was not ready to give up on me yet.”
The staff at Mel Trotter Ministries helped get George a bed so he’d have a safe place to sleep and encouraged him to sign up for our Step-Up program for addiction recovery. George said, “It wasn’t easy, but there came a point when I realized the drugs and alcohol were creating despair and hopelessness.”
Through the program and the compassion George felt from our staff and community of friends like you, he began to heal. “They welcomed me in. I’m one of them. I’ve been welcomed into a brand-new family,” George said.
After George’s graduation from the program, his case manager said, “It has been a long and tough road for him, but he has grown so much, and God is really working in his life.” Today, George is celebrating a year and a half of sobriety and has his own apartment nearby. He still returns to the Mission to attend recovery meetings and encourage others who are in the throes of addiction. As he reflected on his time at Mel Trotter Ministries, he said, “They will do anything and everything possible to help people move on and succeed.”
