Peter’s Story
Peter joined the team as Director of Culinary Services just over a year ago, but his experience, expertise and heart for the Mission makes it seem like he has always been here. When asked what brought him to Mel Trotter Ministries, Peter said, “Just a prayer answered. I’ve always been in the kitchen, but I always wanted God to use me for something greater. I knew I had the ability and the skills for food, especially for people. But I just felt like directing my own life, I was shortchanging myself, not being used to my full potential.”
Reflecting on his favorite part of working at Mel Trotter Ministries, Peter said, “All the guests at the Mission, the relationships, being an obedient servant, answering the call—that’s the best joy for me every day. God could have honored somebody else for my role, but He called me, so I feel honored.”
Peter speaks passionately about the culture he has helped create in the kitchen. “We want to be a godly kitchen. Everything we do has to align with Scripture. It’s not just me, but everyone on the team—staff, volunteers, everyone. We want to align ourselves with the image of who Jesus was. We pray every day before each meal to thank God for what He provides and to remind ourselves to humble ourselves before the Lord.”
Every day looks different for Peter—as you can imagine, it’s not easy coordinating over 500 meals each day. While discussing the varied duties, Peter said, “Some days it’s working with the team on cooking aspects or cleaning, and some days it’s working with outside volunteers. We handle inventory, and take in donations, and I work closely with Alex, my right-hand person, to help run the kitchen. Despite the long hours, it feels like total joy. Twelve hours at the Mission feels like just two.” He also expressed his gratitude for all the food donations coming from different places saying, “The generosity of people who donate food allows our kitchen to not be stingy on portions and also provide some goodies for the kids, like Trix or Cinnamon Crunch, they love that.”
Peter was awarded Employee of the First Quarter and as he reflected on that achievement, he said, “Besides the financial reward, the recognition itself means more to me. It makes me feel like I’m doing what’s best for the Mission and going in the right direction. It’s a good encourager. The success stories of our guests are amazing. Even if four out of ten succeed and move out of the Mission, it’s a big rejoicing for us. Being part of the Mission, even on the culinary side, is about building all the different blocks.”
In his spare time, Peter enjoys cooking, gardening, camping and fishing. He also makes and sells sauces and marinades, which you can pick up on your next trip to the Bridge Street Market.
We are so grateful for Peter and his servant heart. We appreciate him and the hard work he does so faithfully day in and day out.
