Rebecca’s Volunteer Story
Rebecca started volunteering with the Mobile Shower Unit coordinated by the Outreach team, but since has transitioned to working more with the Hope Van. “I began volunteering because I had recently graduated with a degree and found myself with more time on my hands and I just felt like I had to do more to meet the needs of my community that I saw were there,” Rebecca said. Now she volunteers twice a week to connect and build relationships with people who are unsheltered in the community.
“It has been a fantastic experience to learn from the team and witness the compassion this organization has for the community and that brings a lot of hope to me to see all of the hope they bring to other people’s lives,” Rebecca said.
Rebecca recalled a memorable story that involved a guest named Jack, who often visits the Mobile Shower Unit with his dog. One day, the usual food ran out, so she decided to make pancakes. Jack arrived near the end, hungry, and she made him a triple stack of pancakes. The following week, at a different location, Jack told Rebecca that he had been thinking about those pancakes all week. It was a small gesture, but his excitement and gratitude were touching.
When asked about her favorite part about volunteering at Mel Trotter Ministries, Rebecca said, “It’s a really fun experience and you never know what you’ll learn or how you’ll be touched by other people’s lives and how other people may be touched by your life. And it’s just a positive experience to find new connections and meaning.”
If you’re thinking about volunteering, Rebecca said, “Just go for it. It can be intimidating at first if you’re not sure how to carry yourself because whenever you are interacting with new groups of people, it’s going to be a challenge. But just go for it, ask questions to staff members and other volunteers, learn, and just be honest. Engage with integrity, kindness, and openness because I think that is what makes the biggest difference and it’s so worth it. So rewarding.”
Thank you for serving our guests and supporting Mel Trotter Ministries, Rebecca!
