Thank you for 125 years of support!

Dear Friends,

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to be salt and light as the cold weather is upon us. At Mel Trotter Ministries, we provide the very best care for men, women, families, and youth who come through our doors. Our prevention and diversion programs and our community partnerships are designed to keep people housed before they ever need to seek shelter. It is my prayer that many will never have to experience homelessness.

If they do come to us, my hope is that they will not need to stay for long. Every day, our team works tirelessly to help each person launch. We do this through affordable housing, transitional housing, wraparound services, and workforce development.

Still, I will admit, hope can feel fragile at times. There are moments when a guest’s situation feels really complicated. I think of a family with three young children who stayed with us longer than any of us wanted. Their story was layered with challenges like financial struggles, health issues, and setbacks that left me wondering if there was any way forward. And then, earlier this fall, they were able to move into a home. Praise God!

That moment reminded me that our hope cannot rest only in ourselves, our staff, or even the programs we create. Our hope must be rooted in Christ. He is the One who breaks through the darkest circumstances and reminds us that nothing is impossible with Him.

This truth feels especially real in this season. Shorter days and colder nights can make winter feel unbearably dark for those already going through a tough time. Yet it is in these very moments that Christ’s light shines brightest. Through your generosity, Mel Trotter Ministries can open its doors and offer a hot meal, a safe place to sleep, and remind folks that hope is still possible.

This year, as we celebrate 125 years of serving West Michigan, I am grateful. Neighbors, churches, and businesses have stood with us, helping us be salt and light to those who need it most. Because of you, countless lives have been changed, families restored, and futures made bright.

As we look ahead, my prayer is that Mel Trotter Ministries will continue to shine brightly in this city, reflecting the light of Christ to every person who comes through our doors. Thank you, West Michigan, for 125 years of partnership, prayer, and generosity.

Blessings,

When Sarah and her two children arrived at Mel Trotter Ministries, they were facing what felt like an uphill climb. With no income, low credit, and no housing history, the road ahead looked difficult and their dreams felt out of reach. On top of that, Sarah carried the weight of separation from her oldest son, who was not living with her at the time.

Still, Sarah had hope. From the moment she entered shelter, she set clear goals. She wanted to earn her driver’s license, buy a car, find full-time employment, and bring her family back together under one roof.

The road was not easy. She faced challenges with her mental health, strained family relationships, and financial obstacles that tested her strength and perseverance. But Sarah never gave up.

While staying at Mel Trotter Ministries, Sarah and her children received essential care like safe shelter, hot meals, and daily support from staff who walked alongside them each step of the way. During this time, Family Promise of West Michigan provided case management, helping Sarah navigate her next steps, set financial goals, and stay focused on long-term stability. The family also participated in many programs which provided special events and activities for her children and offered Sarah guidance and encouragement as she worked toward her goals.

Step by step, things began looking up. Sarah worked hard to pay down debt and raise her credit score. She passed her driver’s test, bought a vehicle, and found steady employment! And in one of the most joyful moments of her journey, she reunited with her oldest son.

After months of dedication and faith, Sarah paid the deposit and her and her children are preparing to move into a new place they can call home, just in time for Christmas. “My stay was challenging,” Sarah shared through tears. “But it pushed me to do what I needed to do, and I’m so grateful to be where I am today.”

As winter approaches, Sarah’s story shines as a powerful reminder that even in the coldest, darkest seasons, hope has a way of breaking through. Because of caring friends like you, families like hers are finding healing and a new beginning.

Earlier this year, a new light began to shine in West Michigan. At the campus of Next Step of West Michigan, we celebrated the completion of the very first tiny home in Hope Village, a project designed to bring affordable housing and lasting stability to those in our community.

To mark the moment, friends, community members, and government officials gathered and planted flowers around the home. It was a simple reminder that hope can take root when people come together.

Thanks to a generous donation from Talsma Furniture, our first tiny home was fully furnished, transforming it into a warm and welcoming space. Walking through the front door, you can picture a family gathered around the table, light pouring through the windows, and the peace of finally having a place to call home.

Because of you, Hope Village is coming to life. Each home goes beyond just four walls and a roof, providing safety, warmth, and a place where families can truly feel at home.

This is just the beginning. Thank you for bringing hope through housing, one tiny home at a time.

This fall, we had the incredible honor of celebrating 125 years of ministry at our Anniversary Gala. The evening was filled with stories of God’s faithfulness, powerful worship led by Grammy-nominated musician Brandon Heath, and a shared vision for the future—transforming lives in West Michigan.

One of the most moving moments of the night came when Stacy, an alumnus of Mel Trotter Ministries, shared his story. On a freezing day, Stacy walked through our doors with nothing but the clothes on his back. Years of addiction and grief had left him broken and hopeless. But God had more in store. With care from our staff, support from a church family, and love from this community, Stacy found healing. Today, he is over two and a half years sober, reunited with his children, working full-time, and pursuing a master’s degree in addiction counseling so he can help others find freedom too.

“Each one of you is part of my story,” Stacy shared. “Because of your support, lives like mine are being restored. I am eternally grateful that 125 years ago, God inspired a man named Mel Trotter so Stacy could have another chance at life.”

Stories like Stacy’s are possible because of friends like you. From all of us at Mel Trotter Ministries, thank you for 125 years!

We extend a heartfelt thank you to our Honorary Committee and generous sponsors for helping us celebrate this milestone.
