Please join us for the 22nd Annual Thanksgiving Community Meal on November 22, 2018. Anyone who might not otherwise have a Thanksgiving meal is welcome to attend this community meal. No RSVP is necessary for attendees.

Volunteer Opportunities

Registration opens September 1st for the following positions:

  • Beverage Room Helpers: 9:00am - 12:30pm
  • Coat Check: 1st shift: 8:30am - 11:30am
  • 2nd shift: 11:30am – 2:00pm
  • Community Friends( previously Table Hosts): 10:30am - 1:30pm
  • Event Promoters: Anytime at least 2 weeks prior to the event
  • Greeters: 9:00am - 12:30pm
  • Kitchen: 1st shift: 8:00 am - 10:30am
  • 2nd shift: 10:30am – 1:00pm
  • Kitchen Clean-Up Crew: 12:30pm - 2:00pm
  • Registration: 8:00am - 12:30pm
  • Traffic Directors: 9:00am - 12:30pm
  • T-Shirt Distribution: 8:00am – 12:30pm
  • T-Shirt Sorters; 9:00am – 12:00pm, Wednesday November 21

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What time will the meal be served?

    The meal will be served from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

  • Did you volunteer last year?

    If you volunteered last year as an individual or group leader, please log in online using your username and password and select your Thanksgiving Community Meal volunteer opportunity. If you forgot your username and password, please contact us to reset.

    Individuals, can register only 1 guest under their username for this event. Group leaders who already have user accounts and wish to make changes to the list of people in their group and to t-shirt sizes etc, must contact us with these changes at paulaseales@meltrotter.org.

  • How do first-time volunteers including first-time groups sign-up?

    First time individuals or group leaders must complete a user account online in order to register to volunteer at our Thanksgiving Community Meal.

    Individuals can register only 1 guest under their username for this event.

    For groups, please note that a group comprises three or more persons.

    A group leader can sign-up on behalf of the group giving the group name. There are restrictions on the number of volunteers for some positions.

    Please indicate the T-Shirt sizes, the number of volunteers as well as the names of each group member on the form. We also require the Group Leader to send us an e-mail with the names of each volunteer and their shirt sizes at paulaseales@meltrotter.org. to make sure we have the correct information.

    N.B. For the Community Friends (previously Table Hosts) position, a group leader can sign-up no more than 4 persons per table and can sign up for no more than 5 tables.  (This is a total of 20 for this position per group).

    On the day of the event, group members must indicate the name of their group or group leader. T-shirts will be handed out at the Registration Desk.

  • What do I do if I volunteered in the past but not last year?

    Please follow instructions under 3.

  • What time should I arrive?

    Please arrive 30 mins before the time of your shift to check-in and receive instructions.

  • What should I wear?

    Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes. Aprons and hairnets for Kitchen volunteers will be provided by our Kitchen staff.

  • Will there be a bus shuttle service?

    Yes, the Grand Rapids Transportation Service will transport guest to the event.

  • Where can I park?

    Parking is available free of charge on Thanksgiving Day on the lower level at De Vos Place or at the Public Parking lots across the street at the front of the building. If you volunteer on Wednesday, we will provide parking validation passes.

  • Do we eat with the guests?

    Yes. Community Friends (previously Table Hosts) are strongly encouraged to sit and eat with guests at their tables.

  • Can I bring my relative or friend who is visiting for the holiday? Can I just show up?

    We wish to discourage walk-ins at the event because of limited volunteer slots.

  • Can children volunteer?

    Yes, but they must be accompanied by parents or a guardian. In addition, depending on the age of the child, some positions like Kitchen Help, Coat Check are not child-friendly and therefore not available for children.

  • Is there any training?

    Yes, all volunteers will gather in designated areas to receive some instructions at least 15 mins before the start of their shift.

  • Can I hand out bibles?

    No. Only those assigned to the Literature Table will hand out bibles.

  • Do you need my t-shirt size?

    Please provide your T-Shirt size on the sign-up form. If you are a group leader, please list the t-shirt sizes of group members on the form in relevant field.
