Kate’s Story
When Kate, her partner, and their five children walked through the doors of Mel Trotter Ministries, they carried their belongings along with the weight of uncertainty, worry, and the hope that somewhere there was a safe place their family could stay together.
With children ranging from 10 to 16 years old, being separated was not an option. The Pathway Home Program, in collaboration with Family Promise, became the perfect fit. It provided the space they desperately needed and, for the first time in a long time, gave them room to breathe.
But having a safe place to stay was just the beginning. Kate and her family committed themselves to the difficult work of building a new future. Side by side with their case manager, they created a step-by-step plan to reach stable housing. They reviewed credit reports, met with landlord advocates, developed a financial plan to pay down debt, and worked on increasing their credit score. Every appointment, every phone call, every piece of paperwork brought them one step closer to their dream of having a place to call their own.
While staying at Mel Trotter Ministries, Kate’s family also found support in unexpected ways. Daily meals eased one financial burden, allowing them to save for housing costs. Also, the children found joy and a sense of normalcy while playing in the park and playroom, spaces where even their teenagers joined in activities and games.
This spring, after months of perseverance and determination, Kate and her family moved into their very own home! Kate shared with us, “We are thankful for the opportunities we were given and the space that was provided during our time of need. I’m excited to grill and make a home-cooked meal in our new home!
