Katherine’s Story
Being a single mom is never easy, but it can be more challenging when you are also experiencing homelessness. Katherine was doing her best to support three kids while living on the streets, but she was struggling.
When the father took custody of their kids, Katherine felt defeated. “I was by myself, and I was just going down a really bad path,” she said. Katherine was now completely on her own, without even her children to give her purpose. That is when she came to Mel Trotter Ministries.
Once she walked through our doors, Katherine wasn’t alone anymore. She had staff members walking alongside her every step of the way. “The first day was a lot to take in, but I felt love and care from the staff and residents. They just took me in like family,” she said.
Katherine stayed with us for a year while she worked through our program that helped her obtain her GED and put money into savings, volunteered in the kitchen, and attended the church service every Sunday. Now she is working full-time and has a place of her own.
When Katherine discovered recently that one of her sons was experiencing homelessness, living under a bridge, she now could provide him with a home and care. She took her son in, encouraging him to attend church, telling him the life-changing lesson she learned at the Mission: “Without God, it’s going to be a rough road.”
She credits Mel Trotter Ministries for helping her get back on the right path. Katherine said, “My life isn’t perfect, but it’s probably a lot better than it would have been if I didn’t have the Mission in my life.”
