Martina’s Story
As a single mom to two young children and one on the way, Martina faced hardship as she was experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, which made it very difficult to work. The situation spiraled when her partner left and with him went the other source of income for her family. Martina’s biggest hurdle was the daunting back rent balance that she could not pay.
When our Prevention and Diversion team first connected with her, she was already in the process of going back to work at a restaurant because she was adamant about not wanting any part of the eviction process on her record. But she was still struggling to make ends meet for herself and her family. With support in place, she was able to pay a significant portion toward her balance through the combination of paychecks from her job, assistance from friends and family, and selling items that her ex-partner left in her apartment.
However, with her court date for eviction looming, Martina was left with few options for the remaining balance. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to step in and provide the necessary resources to catch her up on rent and avoid eviction. Without the assistance of Mel Trotter Ministries’ Prevention and Diversion team, the situation would have only gotten worse, potentially pushing Martina and her children into homelessness. Today, Martina is self-sufficient and stable. By providing help when it was needed most, her children won’t have to face the devastating effects of homelessness.
