The Payne Family’s Volunteer Story
For more than 25 years, the Payne family has started their Thanksgiving Day the same way: serving at Mel Trotter Ministries. What began as one father’s servant’s heart, has grown into a multi-generational family tradition.
Darryl truly had a heart for others and wanted to pass that along to his children. “He wanted to make sure that before we enjoyed our meal as a family, that we would be selfless, humble, and serve like Christ,” his children shared. Darryl was known for this servant’s heart. He never wanted anyone to be alone during the holidays and always invited people in. During the winter season, he collected coats, hats, and gloves and kept them on hand so he could distribute whenever needed. He was always the last one to leave the Thanksgiving meal just to make sure everything was cleaned up.
Even though Darryl is no longer with us, his children Jeremy, Bethany, Lindsay, and Ashley, continue their father’s legacy. They said, “We do it to keep the memory of our dad alive.” One of his children added, “It doesn’t feel like Thanksgiving without starting at Mel Trotter. It fills your heart.”
All four of the Payne family children continue to serve at the Thanksgiving Community Meal each year, and now five of Darryl’s grandchildren have joined in. The grandchildren are learning to step out of their comfort zones and connect with people from all walks of life, just like their grandfather.
Over the years, the Payne kids have become an example for other friends and families. They have brought new people with them to serve, and often have people reaching out asking how they can get involved.
They’ve grown a real heart for listening to guests’ stories, talking with them, and sharing the love of Christ. Serving together has strengthened their bond as a family, and it’s something they look forward to every year. “It brings us a little comfort knowing our dad is absolutely there with us too.”
When asked what they would say to other families thinking about volunteering for the Thanksgiving Community Meal, they said “Just sign up and come in with an open mind. There are so many ways to serve. If table hosting isn’t your thing, help in the kitchen, at the doors, or at the sign-up tables. Don’t be intimidated. Every role is important.”
For the Payne family, serving on Thanksgiving every year is a way of living out their values and continuing their family’s legacy.
