Shauna’s Story
Fleeing domestic abuse, Shauna took her children and ran as far away as she could. Scared and unsure of what the future may bring, her family was on the brink of homelessness. Shauna knew she needed to find help fast because her children needed nourishing food and a safe place to lay their heads at night. Mel Trotter Ministries was able to be the safe place they were searching for.
Once Shauna and her family arrived, they moved into our Pathway Home program where they began to receive case management. Even with secure shelter, the road was full of many ups and downs.
Shauna was determined to find a job and childcare, but challenges mounted when her vehicle broke down. This made it difficult to manage, especially since her children attended different schools at various times. She applied for state funding for a new vehicle and was initially approved, but after weeks of waiting for an inspection, the funding was unexpectedly revoked.
Despite these setbacks, Shauna’s resilience shined through. We helped her secure a job within walking distance from Mel Trotter Ministries, and her employer accommodated her children’s schedules. However, Shauna was in the process of obtaining housing when every mother’s worst fear happened—her daughter was hospitalized and needed surgery, leading to a reduction in Shauna’s work hours. Even during the uncertainty of her daughter’s illness, Shauna was able to remain strong.
Thankfully, her daughter recovered quickly, and we celebrated by moving the family into their new home! Every day when Shauna sees her kids laughing and playing in their home, her heart fills with gratitude. “I am so grateful and appreciative of everything you were able to do for me,” Shauna said. Now the children are thriving with regular and consistent school attendance!
