New Hope Sobering Center

For over two decades Mel Trotter Ministries has operated a separate shelter inside their rescue mission for individuals who are profoundly intoxicated, and since 2021, anyone who may be under the influence of an illicit substance. New Hope Sobering Center, formerly known as the Grand Rapids Public Inebriate Shelter, acts as a community engagement center and safe diversion from the streets, hospital, and jail systems. The center accepts walk-ins, EMS and law enforcement drop offs, and transfers from local emergency departments. Individuals do not need to be experiencing homelessness to receive services at the center. Licensed nurses employed by Mel Trotter Ministries staff the center and follow a set of triage, admission, and exclusion criteria. Guests accessing the center are treated with compassion and given a place to rest, shower, and receive a meal and fresh clothing.

In 2022, the state of Michigan granted New Hope Sobering Center a substance abuse prevention license. The center is the only sobering center in Michigan listed in the National Sobering Center Collaborative provider directory (https://nationalsobering.org/directory/). Individuals who access our services are assessed for readiness to change and offered an opportunity to meet with an onsite Network 180 engagement specialist. Network 180 engagement specialists are state-certified peer recovery coaches committed to fostering trusting relationships with those struggling with alcohol and drug abuse and serve as a linkage and liaison to area addiction treatment programs.

Transforming Lives

“Consistency is so important, getting to see the same person every other week. I love to interact with everyone at Mel Trotter. This makes me happy,” said Sharon with a smile. “I hit rock bottom but I never gave up. I try to say that to everyone I meet—to never give up.”

Sharon

Sharon smiled at every person who came through her line for COVID-19 screening and testing at Mel Trotter Ministries. She chatted with each one, asked how they were doing, did her best to make everyone feel at ease and cared for. Doing so is her job as a patient service representative for Binson Nursing and Staffing, but it’s also because she knows and loves Mel Trotter Ministries.
