Outreach

An outreach team goes out several times each week to connect and build relationships with people who are unsheltered in the community.

Individuals are offered essential needs like food, water, blankets, clothing, and showers. Additionally, unsheltered individuals are also offered transportation to the MTM shelter, other day centers, or a familiar safe location they identify.

The outreach team also helps to connect individuals to community resources, housing, employment, and obtaining vital documents.

Mobile Shower Unit

To meet the need of accessible showers to those who are unsheltered, the MTM Mobile Shower Unit is proactively going to various locations throughout the community, via the outreach team.

This offering provides a hot shower, change of undergarments and clothes, hygiene items and access to additional resources as requested.

Hope Van Outreach:

MTM has outreach teams that go out daily to different areas in the greater Grand Rapids area (and soon all of Kent county) to build relationships with folks in encampments, staying in doorways, under bridges, and visiting day centers to help them navigate resources, find employment, attain housing, and provide basic care items that are needed.

Hope Van

Medical Outreach Van:

MTM also has a medical outreach van that we are currently using to bring health care to encampments to provide street medicine to those who are experiencing unsheltered homelessness and getting them connected to primary care physicians and/or clinics to avoid more hospital visits for non-emergent medical care.

Transforming Lives

“When everything went downhill for me, this is where I ended up,” says David* of his first visit to Mel Trotter Ministries four years ago. He arrived following the death of his beloved wife. “I basically lost my mind,” he says of his bereavement.

David

David was able to work, but he grappled with a serious drinking problem. He sought to overcome his issue, entered rehab, enrolled in a sober living house and began working two jobs. One night, he celebrated his progress with a beer, but quickly found himself in trouble again. Over the next few years, David spent significant time living on the streets of Grand Rapids. He would intermittently turn to Mel Trotter for a hot meal or a warm place to spend the night. He was always welcomed with love, dignity and respect.
