GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Mel Trotter Ministries announced Thursday they will activate Code Blue protocols starting Saturday as dangerous cold weather approaches West Michigan.
Mel Trotter Ministries provides services to people experiencing homelessness. They’re also hosting a coat giveaway on Jan. 30 to help those needing winter gear such as coats, hats, scarves, gloves and more.
In accordance with Code Blue protocols, the shelter will expand capacity to accommodate approximately 50 additional overnight guests at their main shelter through Thursday afternoon.
Outreach teams will conduct additional patrols Sunday through Wednesday nights to locate and assist people experiencing homelessness who may need help during this incoming arctic blast.
The organization is also opening its overflow day center at 225 Commerce SW.
They are also coordinating with community partners to establish warming centers throughout Kent County during the cold snap.
The organization relies on donations to maintain services, particularly during extreme weather events that put additional strain on resources.
