Code Blue Drive: Find Drop Off Locations

Grand Rapids, Mich. (Oct. 2, 2023) – Mel Trotter Ministries, the largest provider of services to people experiencing homelessness in West Michigan, today marked the grand opening of the MTM Thrift Clearance Store in downtown Grand Rapids. The store, located at 1314 South Division, will offer gently used clothing, furniture and other household goods to residents in need of affordable items.

“This new thrift store provides an easily accessible option for quality household and personal items for the community,” said Dennis Van Kampen, president and CEO of Mel Trotter Ministries. “Not only is this clearance store conveniently located, but it also is a budget-friendly alternative for families struggling with the impact of inflation. All of the proceeds from this and our other thrift stores go towards financially sustaining the work we do at MTM. It’s all part of our continuing effort to provide the compassion of Jesus Christ to those in our community who need our support.”

Mel Trotter Ministries purchased the building and the existing retail operation from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in July, 2023. It’s located near the Next Step of West Michigan facility on Garden Avenue SE, and will now be used for multiple purposes. In addition to the newly renovated retail outlet, the building will also serve as a warehousing operation for all MTM thrift stores. Additionally, it will be used as a classroom location for Mel Trotter’s workforce development programs, and serve as a gathering space for community meetings.

The new MTM Thrift Clearance Store will be open Monday-Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at any time during those regular business hours. All proceeds generated from the sale of items at the store will be used to help cover the cost of various Mel Trotter initiatives, including its job training programs, addiction recovery services, clinic operations, rental housing costs and ministry.

This is the sixth retail store owned and operated by Mel Trotter. The organization also has retail outlets at 2820 29th Street SE, Grand Rapids, 1435 60th Street SE, Kentwood, 538 S. State Street, Sparta, 7500 Cottonwood Drive, Suite D, Jenison and 363 E. State Street, Belding.

MTM Thrift provides dozens of easy drop-off sites throughout greater Grand Rapids and also has a free donation pick up service. Donors can schedule items to be picked up by going to www.pickupmydonation.com. Store job opportunities, donation and shopping information can be found at www.mtmthrift.com.
