Grand Rapids, Mich. (Nov. 8, 2023) – Dennis Van Kampen, President and CEO of Mel Trotter Ministries in Grand Rapids, announced today that he will leave the organization at the end of 2023, after serving nearly nine years as the leader of West Michigan’s largest agency serving
individuals experiencing hunger and homelessness.

Van Kampen submitted his resignation to the Board of Directors on November 6, clearing the way for him to accept an offer to serve as President and CEO of the Denver Rescue Mission in Denver, Colorado.

“Truly, it’s been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve this ministry and this community,” said Van Kampen. “I’m grateful to the Board, our amazing staff, business and municipal leaders, and the tremendously generous donors in our community who have helped us deliver on our
mission to demonstrate the compassion of Jesus Christ toward anyone experiencing hunger or homelessness. For over 123 years, God has richly blessed this ministry, and I know He has great things in store for Mel Trotter in the years to come.”

In reflecting on his time at Mel Trotter, Van Kampen said he was especially proud of how the organization evolved as a beacon of compassion inside and out.

“I’m thankful for the service our executive team, staff and volunteers deliver each day, and the positive culture that has been developed here over the years,” said Van Kampen. “I’m also proud of how we have brought a higher level of dignity to our guests through our recently renovated shelter and enhanced services, allowing us to help more people than ever before to break free of the cycle of homelessness.”

Under Van Kampen’s leadership, Mel Trotter has greatly expanded shelter services, including new medical and vision clinics, mental health and substance abuse recovery resources, workforce development initiatives, prevention and diversion programs, and transitional housing. Mel Trotter is now undertaking the development of Hope Village, the first tiny home community in Grand Rapids, to provide more affordable housing for individuals and families dealing with homelessness.

“Mel Trotter Ministries and the greater Grand Rapids community has been blessed to have Dennis leading our organization through this time of growth and transition,” said Board Chair Anedra Eatman. “Dennis is an innovative and compassionate servant-leader who gives every ounce of his energy to ending homelessness one life at a time. His dedication in the service of others has been an inspiration to all of us and will be greatly missed.”

In the wake of Van Kampen’s resignation, the Mel Trotter Board has taken two steps regarding future leadership at the organization. First, board members selected Gordon Oosting, Chief Financial Officer, to serve as interim CEO while a nationwide search for a replacement is conducted. The Board also promoted Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer, Adrienne Goodstal, to the permanent role of President of Mel Trotter Ministries. Goodstal has been with Mel Trotter for more than nine years and has served on the executive team for more than eight
years.

“This was a difficult decision because I was not looking to leave,” said Van Kampen. “I believe God placed me here to be a good steward for the community and it’s clear to me that He’s now calling me to a new mission. As I prepare to head out on that next journey, I’m comforted by the
kindness of friends, colleagues, community partners and donors who have made our time here in Grand Rapids so fulfilling. I leave with a heart full of love, a head full of unforgettable memories, and an unwavering appreciation for the kindness that exists in this community.”
