Mel Trotter Ministries exists to demonstrate the compassion of Christ to individuals in need, and we do that in more ways than people think. Take the Art Ministry program, as an example. It is not just an activity, but a journey toward healing, self-expression, and community building.

The Art Ministry program has Christ at the center and serves as a creative outlet for guests, allowing them to explore their creativity and express themselves while navigating through personal hardship and trauma. The program is designed to be inclusive, offering various forms of art such as painting and drawing which ensures that every guest can find a medium that resonates with them.

Dreyson, a Triage Specialist on staff, uses his talents and passion for art to head up the art classes. He said “We always start every class with a prayer. We kind of set the tone for the class, then a lot of guests will work on things that talk about Jesus…”

Dreyson shared the story of Vicki and how the art class helped her navigate grief. He said, “Vicki received news about her sister’s passing, she was very distraught and sad but remained faithful. Given her family resides out of the country, she knew she wouldn’t be able to travel to the funeral. Vicki received the news the day before art class and shared that she was looking forward to class so she could create something to celebrate her sister’s life. Vicki came to class with a heavy heart filled with intention and set about creating a piece in memory of her sister. Leaving class, Vicki shared how much the class meant to her and how much better she felt having the opportunity to process her grief through art.”

Our commitment to the well-being of the guests we serve is reflected in the Art Ministry program. By recognizing the therapeutic value of art, we are helping individuals see beyond their current circumstances. It reminds us that during life’s challenges, beauty and expression find a way to flourish, providing a pathway to healing and hope.

Dreyson said, “It has been a tremendous blessing to see the way God has worked through the guests here and through the opportunities that he has given staff to work together and create these opportunities.”
